Hostess Duties

"It's kind of like a fluffer." She giggled. "I mean, I do that *too*, but..."

I realized a woman was talking to me. That she'd just introduced herself, said she was the hostess.

"... mostly I make sure that my guests are having a good time, and that they don't wake up too much. Because it feels good to stay asleep."

"It feels good to stay asleep," I replied immediately. Where had *that* come from? I wasn't even quite sure where I was. I tried to think back. I was at a party, and a woman-- a different woman, with deep, compelling eyes-- had been talking... Everyone was clustered around her, listening intently, and she held up a shiny pendulum, swinging back and forth...

The hostess smiled a delighted smile and nodded encouragingly. "Yes, it feels good to stay asleep."

"It feels good to stay asleep," I repeated. The pendulum, and a sultry compelling voice...

She said some more things, and I repeated them, but they were all obviously true and right and I didn't need to pay attention. I drifted, and the sounds of the party drifted around me...
